Original 1932 pattern reworked 1989.
This jumper is worked in an unusual chevron stitch using a Tunisian crochet hook.
The deep cuffs and welts are knitted in a fine rib, and the rib also edges the crew neck.
MATERIALS – Rowan 4ply Botany wool:
7 25g hanks main color;
4 25g hanks color A
3 25g hanks color B
4mm (9) Tunisian crochet hook: pair of 2 3/4 mm (12) knitting needles; set of four 2 3/4 mm (12) double pointed needles; one 3 3/4mm (9) knitting needle.
TENSION – 1 pattern (6 sts) to 2.5cm [1 inch] approximately over 4mm (8) Tunisian hook.
STITCHES – 1 . k1,p1 rib: 2. chevron pattern
SIZES – To fit bust 84(86)cm [32(34)inches]; length 44.5cm [17 1/2inches]; sleeve seam 44.5cm [17 1/2inches]

yrh – yarn round hook
FRONT With 2 3/4mm (12) needles and M cast on 114 (126) sts and work in k1,p1 rib for 13cm [5inches]. On the last row change to 3 3/4mm (9) needle and dec evenly across this row to 92(102)sts.
Slip all sts on to a 4mm (8) Tunisian hook. Join in A at left hand side of work.
Next row yrh, draw loop through first st. * yrh and draw loop through 2sts; rep from * to end,
1 turning ch.
NOTE Tunisian crochet is worked over an outward and return row and these two rows are counted as 1 row
Foundation row: (outward) hook in 2nd vertical st, yrh, bring up 1 loop, hook from right to left through middle of next 4 vertical sts and leave these sts on hook without working them, * take up 1 loop througheach of the next 2 vertical sts and leave on hook without working; rep from * to end taking up 1 loop through each of the last 2 sts.
Foundation row: (return) yrh and lip off 1 loop for the edge, yrh and lip off 2 loops, * yrh and slip off 5 loops (the working st and the 4 unworked sts of previous row), yrh, slip off 2 loops, yrh, slip off 2 loops: rep from * to end and slip off last 2 loops for edge.
Row 1 (outward) yrh, hook into 2nd vertical st, yrh, bring up 1 loop, * yrh (make1), hook in space preceding group, (pull up loop) 3 times [6sts on hook], yrh, hook in space following group, [pull up 1 loop] 3 times, 1 loop through each next 2sts: rep from * to end of row.
Row 1 (return)yrh, slip off 1 loop for edge, yrh, slip off 2 loops, * yrh, slip off 13 loops (the working st and two groups of 6 sts) made at sides of 4 st group) yrh, slip off 2 loops, yrh, slip off 2 loops: rep from * to end of row, 1 turning ch.
One outward and return row forms pattern.
INCREASE ROWS, – row 1: as return pattern row but making 2 extra ch at each end.
Row 2 : as outward pattern row but picking up the 2 extra sts at each end of previous row.
Row 3: as return pattern row slipping extra 2 sts off singly.
Row 4: as return pattern row but make an extra half pattern on 2 extra sts at each end.
Row 5: as return pattern row.
Row 6: as outward pattern row incorporating half pattern.
Row 7: as return pattern row making 2 extra ch at each end.
Row 8: as outward pattern row picking up extra 2 sts at each end.
Row 9: as return pattern row but slip extra 2 sts off singly.
Row 10: as outward pattern row but make another half pattern.
There should be 17 (19) patterns. Work until there are 13 patterns in height.
Join in M and work these 10 inc rows 19(21) patterns.
Work 7 patterns rows.
SHAPE ARMHOLES – Miss 2 patterns, join in M and work to last 2 patterns, turn. Work straight until 13 pattern rows have been worked.
Join in B. Work 7 pattern rows.
DIVIDE FOR NECK, – Work as for outward pattern row, work 2 loop, a stitch group, 5(6) times, 2 loops.
Dec a half pattern at neck on each of 2 full outward rows (2 loops, 4(5) patterns, 2 loops).
Work on these st until 18 pattern rows have been worked.
Miss centre 5 patterns and work other side to match.
BACK – With 2 3/4mm (12) needles cast on 108(114) and work as for Front dec evenly along row to 86(92)sts.
Work as for Front omitting neck shaping.
SLEEVES – With 2 3/4mm (12) needles and M, cast on 58sts and work in k1,p1 rib for 30.5cm [12inches] inc 1 st each side of every 4th row until there are 86(92) sts and working last row on 3 3/4mm (9) needles. Change to A.
Transfer stitches to 4mm (8) Tunisian hook and work as for Back until 13 patterns have been worked. Change to next color and work 7 patterns.
Miss 2 patterns, rejoin yarn and work 1 row. Dec one half pattern on every alternate outward pattern row until 2(3) patterns remain.
Break off wool.
NECK RIB – Sew shoulder seams. With set of 4 2 3/4mm (12) needles pick up and K130 sts. Work in k1,p1 rib for 9cm [3 1/2 inches].
Cast off very loosely.
Sew cast off edge to inside of neck. Sew side and sleeve seams.
