This hat is….. Awesome!!!
Ok, so this openwork brimmed hat is in a word, versatile. It can have such a different look to it depending on color and how you wear it. Check out these pictures. And the flowers!!!! The two hats scream the 70’s. I never had the guts to wear something like that (the white hat is more my style) but it was a thing at one time. On the one hand it looks vibrant and fun in the yellow and blue but in white it’s nothing but class.
This is a free crochet pattern, vintage 1974.
Hat can be adjusted to fit all sizes.
MATERIALS: Coats & Clark’s O.N.T. “Speed-Cro-Sheen,” Mercerized Cotton: 6 balls of white or bright color. Crochet hook, size H or size to obtain gauge. About 50″ of millinery wire to stiffen brim, if desired.
GAUGE: 7 sc = 2″; 3 sc and 1 dc rnds = 1 1/2″
NOTE: Use 2 strands held together throughout.
Starting at center with 2 strands held tog, ch 4. Join with st st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 6sc in ring. Join with sl st to first sc.
Rnd 2: Ch1, 2sc in same sc as joining, 2sc in each rem sc. Join to first sc – 12sc.
Rnd 3: Ch1, sc in same sc as joining, 2sc in each of next 5sc, sc in next sc, 2sc in next 5sc. Join-22sc.
Rnd 4: Ch 3, dc in same sc as joining, * 2dc in next sc; rep from * around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3-44dc, counting ch-3 as 1 dc.
Rnd 5: Ch1, sc in same st as joining and in each dc around. Join to first sc.
Rnds 6-7: Ch1, sc in same sc as joining and in each sc around. Join.
Rnd 8: Ch3, 2dc in same sc as joining, * sk next sc, 3dc in following sc; rep from * around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3 – 66 dc. Always count ch-3 as 1dc.
Rnds 9,10, 11: Ch1, sc in same st as joining and in each st around. Join.
Rnd 12: Ch3, 2dc in same sc as joining, *sk 2 sc, 3dc in next sc; rep from * around. Join with sl st to top of ch-3-66 dc.
Rnds 13 through 19: Rep rnds 9 through 12 once,then rep rnds 9 through 11 once more.
Rnd 1: rep rnd 8 of crown-99dc.
Rnds 2,3 and 4: Rep rnds 9, 10 and 11 of crown.
Rnd 5: Ch3, 3dc in same sc as joining, * sk 2 sc 4dc in next sc; rep from * around. Join – 132.
Rnds 6,7 and 8: Rep rnds 9,10 and 11 of crown.
Rnd 9: Ch3, 4dc in same sc as joining, * sk 3 sc, 5dc in next sc; rep from * around. Join – 165dc.
Rnds 10,11 and 12: Rep rnds 9, 10 and 11 of crown. Break off and fasten. If a stiff brim is desired, work last rnd of sc over wire; before completing rnd, stretch sts over wire to desired shape, allowing 1/2″ for sewing, cut wire; sew ends together; complete rnd over joined wire.
With double strand, make a chain 50″long. Break off and fasten. Weave cord through last sc rnd of crown; adjust to size; tie ends into a bow. Tie a knot at each end.
