Very handsome pullover made with Aunt Lydia’s Heavy Rug Yarn. This free knitting pattern is for a men’s raglan slipover. Though this is a vintage knitting pattern the style is timeless and this is a perfect time of year to work on keeping him warm.
Sizes: Small, Medium and Large
Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY “AUNT LYDIA’S” HEAVY RUG YARN 11 (12, 13) 70yd skeins – Myrtle Green.
Aluminum Knitting Needles No. 8 and No. 11 or any size needles which will result in stitch gauge below.
1 set double pointed knitting needles No. 8
GAUGE: For No.11 needles 4 sts = 1 inch 4 rows = 1 inch.
Directions are given for Small (38-40) size. Changes for Medium (42, 44) and Large (46, 48) sizes are given in parentheses.
BACK: Work 15 (17, 19) inches or length desired before starting raglan shaping.
With No. 8 needles cast on 77( 85, 93) sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 2 3/4 inches (all sizes) ending on a K1, P1 row. Change to No. 11 needles.
1st PATTERN ROW: K1, * sl 1 as if to P, K1, repeat from * across row.
2nd PATTERN ROW: P across row. Repeat these 2 rows until back measures 14 1/2(15, 15 1/2) inches from beg or length desired to underarm ending with 2nd pattern row.
Next 2 Rows: Bind off 5 sts (all sizes) at beg of each row.
Next 5 Rows: Dec 1 st at beg and end of each row.
Next Row: Work even in pattern .
Next Row: Dec 1 st at beg and end of row. Repeat last 2 rows 16(19,21) times. Bind off remaining sts.
FRONT: Work same as back to underarm.
Next Row: Bind off 5 sts (all sizes) work in pattern across next 33 (37, 41) sts, place the next st (center st) on a safety pin to be worked later for neck band, attach another skein of yarn and working both sides at one tie work across remaining sts.
Next Row: Bind off 5 sts (all sizes) at beg of row armhole edge work across row. Complete raglan shaping same as back. At the same time dec 1 st at neck edge every 4th row 9(10, 11) times, 2 (2,3) sts remain.
Next Row: P the 2 (2,3) sts tog, cut yarn.
SLEEVES: With No. 8 needles cast on 31(35, 39) sts. Work in ribbing for 2 inches (all sizes), then work even in pattern until work measures 3 1/2 inches (all sizes) from beg, then work increases same as ending with a K1, P1 row.
Next 2 Rows: (all sizes): Change to No. 11 needles and work even in pattern.
Next Row: Inc 1 st at eg and end of row. Repeat last 3 rows 12 (13, 16) times. Work even until sleeves measure 14(15, 16) inches from beg or length desired to underarm. Then work raglan shaping same as back. Cut yarn.
FINISHING: Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew sleeves in position.
NECK BAND: Attach yarn at left shoulder edge, with double pointed needles and dividing sts evenly on needles, pick up and K37 (39, 41) sts along neck edge, K the center st (always K the center st), pick up and K 37(39, 41) sts on opposite side, pick up and K21(23, 25) sts across sleeve edge, back of neck and other sleeve edge. There are 96(102, 108) sts. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 4 rows (all sizes) dec 1 st on each side of center st every row, bind off in ribbing.
