This bag is large and eye catching, a fun summer piece.
Free vintage crochet pattern 1972.
Size : 13in wide by 16in deep
Gauge: 18 sts and 8 rows to 3in over dc worked on No. B crochet hook
Materials: 2 balls American Thread Purtian Bedspread Cotton Art. 40
28 plastic curtain rings 3/4in diameter
Using No. B hook, work 32sc into the first ring, ending with a ss into first sc.
1st round Ch 1 to form first sc, 1sc into each of following 31sc, ending with ss into first ch1
2nd round Ch1 to form first sc, 1sc into each of next 2sc, 2sc into next sc, * 1sc into each of next 3sc, 2sc into next sc, rep from * to end of round, ending with ss into first ch1. 40sc.
3rd round Ch1, skip 2sc, into next sc work 3dc, ch3 and 3dc – called a gr-, * skip 4sc, 1gr into next sc, rep from * until 2sc remaining, skip these 2sts, work ss around first ch1.
Fasten off 8grs.
Work 23 more stars in same manner. These will be joined into two squares of 3 stars across by 4 stars down, one square for back and one for front of bag, and joined as following:
Joining round Using No. B hook attach yarn to one of the ch3 loops of any gr and work ch3 to form first dc, 2dc into same loop, *ch4, 1sc into ch3 loop of next gr, ch4, 1gr into loop of next gr to form corner, repeat from * twice, ch4, 1sc into loop of next gr, ch4, 3dc and ch3 into first loop to complete corner, ending with ss into 3rd of first ch3.
Joining round for 2nd star Using No. B hook attach yarn to one of the ch3 loops of any gr and work ch3 to form first dc, 2dc into same loop, ch2 now work with first star placed so that both WS are facing each other, 1sc into ch4 loop of first star, ch2, 1sc worked into both the next gr of 2nd star and sc of first star, ch2, 1sc into next ch4 loop of first star, ch2, 3dc into next gr of 2nd star to begin corner, ch1, 1ss into corner loop of first star, ch1, 3dc into same sp in 2nd star to complete corner, then complete joining round as for the first star.
All stars are joined in this manner, noting that when more than 2 corners meet, the ss should be worked into the joining st of the previous corners. Continue on the two squares now formed, working separately on each.
Using No. B hook and with RS of work facing, beg in a ch3 corner loop and work as following:
1st round Ch3 to form first dc, 2dc into same corner loop, skip next 2dc, 1dc into next dc, *4dc into next ch4 loop, 1dc into next sc, 4dc into next ch4 loop, 1dc into each of following 3dc, 1dc into st connecting squares, 1dc into each of following 3dc, rep from * along each side until reaching last square before corner, then rep from * but ending with 1dc only not 3dc and finishing square to corner thus : skip next 2dc into corner loop work 3dc, ch3 and 3dc, skip next 2dc, 1dc into next dc, then rep from * again. Work until all four sides have been completed ending with ss into 3rd of first ch3.
2nd and 5th rounds Ch3 to form first dc, 2dc into same corner loop, * skip next 2dc, 1dc into each dc following until 2dc only remember before corner loop, skip these 2dc, into corner loop work 3dc, ch3 and 3dc, rep from * twice more, then skip next 2dc, 1dc into each dc following until 2dc only remain before first corner worked, skip these 2dc, 3dc into corner loop, ch3, ss into 3rd of first ch3.
When other piece has been worked to correspond, join them as follows:
Using No. B hook and with WS of both squares facing, beg with ss through center ch of both ch3 corner loops at left-hand edge of short edge, then work along 4 square motif edge by placing hook through both corresponding dcs of each piece and working 1sc into each pair of sts and turning corners by working 7sc into corner loops, continue until 3 sides have been completed and ending with 1sc into center ch of both corner loops. Turn
Next row Ch1, skip next 2sc, * 1gr into next sc, skip following 4sc, rep from * to corner, into 4th sc of 7 corner sc,work 1gr, then continue rep from * working 2nd corner as first corner and ending row with 1gr, skip next sc, ss into first ch1.
Run in all ends. Press bag lightly under a damp cloth with a warm iron. Into 4 curtain rings work 32sc, using No. B hook. Fasten off securely, then sew one to each corner at top of bag back and front. Join tops of rings tog with ss tightly. Make cord by cutting 32 ends of yarn 60in long. Tie knot in one end, then twist other end until cord is taut, thread one end of cord through rings at top of back, knot both loose ends tog and let cord twist tog to make single cord about 24in long.
Trim ends of knots.
