I don’t think this would be a part of Lady Mary’s ensemble but this lovely halter and hat
remind me of an afternoon tea on the lawn at Downton Abbey. Simple attractive rose flatter the halter and hat. The hat also has a small picot detail that adds a bit of class. Mr Carson would not approve. But I think it is lovely. I hope you will as well.
SIZES: Directions are for size 8. Changes for sizes 12,14 and 16 are in parentheses.
MATERIALS: Bernat Dorlaine (40gr balls): 2(2-3-3) balls of #6342 Silver/ White or halter:
1 ball for hat.
Knitting Needles, 1 pair No. 4 or size to obtain gauge. Double pointed needles, No. 4
Crochet hook, size D or 3.00 mm
GAUGE: Stockinette st – 13 sts = 2″ 8 rows = 1″. Ribbing – 8 sts = 1″; 8 rows = 1″.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Width of back at underarm – 14(14 1/2 – 15 1/4/ – 16)”. Width of front at underarm – 15(16-17-19 1/2)”.
HALTER – BACK
Cast on 97(103-109-115) sts.
Row 1: K1, *p1, k1; rep form * across row.
Row 2: P1, *k1, p1; rep from * across row. Rep these 2 rows for 4″. Keeping continuity of ribing throughout, inc one st each end of needle on next row and every 6th row thereafter 6 times more. Work even on 111(117-123-129) sts until piece measures 9 1/2 “.
Work in ribbing over 35 sts; join another ball of yarn and bind off center 41(47-53-59) sts, work to end of row. Working on both sides at once with separate strands at each center back edge bind off 4 sts every other row 6 times, and At The Same Time, dec 1 st at same edge every other row 6 times. Bind off rem 5 sts of each side.
Work same as Back until piece measures 4″, ending with Row 1.
Row 1: (wrong side) P2, work in ribbing to last 2 sts, p2.
Row 2: K3, working in ribbing as established to last 3 sts, k3. Continue in this manner to work one st more in st st (k1 row, p1 row ) each end of needle Every Row until all sts have been worked in st st, ending with a wrong-side row.
Next Row: K 47(50-53-56) sts, sl rem 50(53-56-59)sts onto a st holder. Working on sts of Left Side Only, cast on 3 sts for overlap, turn – 50(53,56,59) sts.
Row 1: P1, k1 p to end of row
Row 2: K to last 4 sts, k 2 tog, p1, k1 – dec made at neck edge. Keeping 2 sts at neck edge in p1, k1 ribbing and working all other sts in st st, continue to dec one st at neck edge in same manner as before every other row 32(34-36-38) times more, and At The Same Time, when piece measures same length as Back at side edge, Shape Side Edge as follows:
Row 1: Bind off 6(6-7-8) sts work to end of row.
Row 2: Work to last 2 sts (arm edge) k1,p1.
Row 3: K1, p1, k2 tog through back loops, work to end of row. Rep last 2 rows 3(4-4-4) times. Then keeping 2 sts at arm edge in ribbing as established, continue to dec at neck edge in same manner as before until 7 sts rem. Work even on 7 sts until piece is desired length to center back of neck. Bind off.
Right Side: Sl the 50(53-56-59) sts from holder onto needles. Join yarn at center front and finish to correspond to left side, reversing all shaping. To Dec At Arm Edge, work to last 4 sts, k2 tog, p1, k1.
FINISHING: Sew side seams. Sew back of neck seam. Sew underlap in place. Steam seams.
Ch 6. Join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: 12 sc in ring.
Rnd 2: * Ch 4, sk next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around – 6 lps.
Rnd 3: * In next ch -4 lp make sc, 3 dc and sc; rep from * around – 6 petals.
Rnd 4: *Ch 6, sk next 4 sts, sc in back lp of next sc; rep from * around.
Rnd 5: * In next ch-6 lp make 1 sc, hdc, 4 dc, hdc and sc; rep from * around.
Rnd 6: *Ch 8, sk next 7 sts, sc in back lp of next sc; rep from * around.
Rnd 7: * In next ch-8 lp make sc, hdc, 7 dc hdc and sc; rep from * around.
Rnd 8: Sc in each st around. Join with sl st in next sc. Breat off and fasten.
Center Ch 2.
Rnd 1: Make 9 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: *Sk next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc; rep from * around. Sl st in first sc. Break off and fasten. Sew center to starting ring of flower. Sew flower to center front of halter at beg of neck shaping.
Using dp needles, cast on 128 sts. Divide sts evenly on 3 needles. Join, being careful not to twist sts. Work in rnds of k1, p1 in ribbing for 6 1/2″. Now work in st st (k each rnd).
Dec Rnd 1: * K 6, k 2 tog; rep from * around. K 4 rnds even.
Dec Rnd 2: * K 5, k 2 tog; rep from * around. K 4 rnds even.
Dec Rnd 3: *K 4, k 2 tog; rep from * around. K 4 rnds even.
Dec Rnd 4: * K 3, k2 tog; rep from *around. K 4 rnds even.
Dec Rnd 5: *K 2, K 2 tog; rep from * around. K 4 rnds even.
Dec Rnd 6: * K 1, k 2 tog; rep from * around. K 4 rnds even.
Dec Rnd 7: * K 2 tog around. Break off yarn, leaving an 8″ end.
Using a darning needle, draw end through rem sts and pull up tightly. Fasten off.
Rnd 1: With right side facing, sc evenly along lower edge of hat.
Rnd 2: * Sc in each of next 2 sts, ch 5, sl st in same st ( picot): rep from * around. Join with sl st to first sc. Break off and fasten.
First rnd of petals: Ch 6. Join with sl st to form a ring.
Rnd 1: 12 sc in ring.
Rnd 2: *Ch 5, make 2 tr in next sc, ch 5, sl st in next sc; rep from * around. Break off and fasten. Make 2 more rnds of petals in same way. Hold the 3 rnds of petals tog and sew rings tog.
Center: Ch 2.
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 3: (Sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc) twice.
Rnd 4: Sc in each sc around.
Rnd 5: Stuff with cotton, (sk next sc, sc in next sc) 4 times. Sl st in next sc. Break off and fasten. Sew to center of flower. Sew flower to hat.
