Free crochet pattern for vintage 1975 hat and mittens.
It wasn’t until I was older that I came to see how awesome a beret could be. This simple little hat can help keep your head warm or hide a bad hair day and do both with style. Audrey Hepburn probably inspired this little hat and I bet she could rock that pompom no problem, me, not so much.

This vintage crochet pattern has a very bold pom pom on top that, if I am honest is a bit too much for me but I bet you could pull it off.

I have been wanting to make a hat and I think that because this is an easier pattern, this is the one I am going to try. I have some fantastic suede like yarn in a beautiful blue that should be
MATERIALS: Bernat Blarney – Spun (2oz. balls) – 5 / 1 Bernat – Aero crochet hook size 4:00 (F) or any size hook that will give the stitch gauge given below.
GAUGE: 9 sts = 2 inches 9 rows = 2 inches
Rnd 1: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook.
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around 6 sts inc.
Rnd 3: * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around 6 sts inc.
Rnd 4: *1 sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, repeat from * around – 6 sts inc. Continue in this manner to inc 6 sts in each round, being sure that increases do not come directly over each other, 18 times more – 132 sc. Work even in sc for 3 rounds. On the next round dec 4 sts and repeat this dec round EVERY ROUND 10 times, being sure that decreases do not come directly over each other – 88 sc. Fasten off.
POMPOM: Cut a piece of cardboard to measure 3 inches. Wind yarn around cardboard 30 times. Slip yarn off cardboard and tie tightly in center. Cut loops at each end and shake vigorously. Trim ends. Sew to top of beret.
Ch 32 sts loosely to measure 7 inches. Join with sl st t first st, being careful not to twist sts.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, 1sc in each of 32 ch sts, join with sl st to ch 1 of previous round, ch 1.
Rnd 2: 1 sc in each st, join, ch 1.
Repeat round 2 until piece measures 3 inches.
SHAPE THUMB GUSSET
Rnd 1: Starting at beg of a round, work 15 sc, put a marker in work, 2 sc in each of next 2 sts, put a marker in work , work to end of round, join, ch 1.
Rnds 2 and 3: Work 1 sc in each st, join, ch 1.
Rnd 4: 1 sc in each st to first marker, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each st to 1 st before next marker, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in each st to end of round, join ch 1. Repeat the last 3 rounds until there are 10 sts between markers.
Rnd 1: Work to 2nd marker, ch 2, join to first st of thumb gusset, remove markers.
Rnd 2: Work 1 sc in each st and in each ch st, join, ch 1 – 12 sts. Continue in sc on 12 sts until thumb measures 1/2 inch less than desired finished length.
Rnd 1: Dec 6 sts,join, ch 1.
Rnd 2: Dec 3 sts join. Break off yarn, leaving an 8 inch end. Pull end through remaining 3 sts and draw up tightly. Fasten off.
Join yarn at first ch st of thumb and work 1 sc in each ch st, work to end of round, join, ch 1 – 32 sts.
Repeat round 2 until piece measures 1 1/2 inches less than desired finished length.
Rnd 1: * 1 sc in each of next 6 sts, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yo and draw through all loops on hook (dec), repeat from * around, join ch 1 – 4 sts dec. Continue to dec 4 sts in a round EVERY ROUND until 4 sts remain. Breakk off yarn, leaving a 8 inch end.
Finish in same manner as Thumb.
Work 1 row sc around lower edge. Fasten off. Steam.
Ch 59. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off.
Cut a piece of cardboard to measure 2 inches. Wind yarn around cardboard 34 times. Slip yarn off cardboard and tie tightly in center. Cut loops at each end and shake vigorously. Trim ends. Sew to end of ties.
